Marijuana use is on the rise, and in our society there are different generation opinions about it. Some say that cannabis should be illegal, while others think it’s a harmless, fun activity for those who enjoy weed; we’ll see what happens over time to change these views!
The cultural climate surrounding marijuana has changed dramatically in recent years. Once seen as dangerous and illegal, many people today see smoking cannabis as something that can be done on occasion. Without any real harm to themselves or others – even though the law says differently! This change is largely due not just to how common it’s become but also to what we know about its effects: namely, they aren’t nearly as bad in-fact some studies suggest this form of medication may even help prevent cancer cells from growing.
The social stigma against marijuana has decreased significantly since the turn of this new century. Legalization and decriminalization have allowed people in many countries to enjoy its recreational use without fear of punishment or fine, even if they’re previously convicted elsewhere with possession crimes-related charges!
Whether you’re a millennial or the oldest person alive, it seems like everyone is catching on. Medical-marijuana has been legal in some countries for quite some time now, and as these younger generations grow into adulthood, they seem increasingly likely to approve of the legalization too!
Let’s understand the opinion of each generation and see where we stand today:
The Silent Generation
The silent-generation is the most likely to oppose marijuana legalization, with only 26% in favour. This could be due in part to the time period during which they grew up: the 1930s-1950s were characterized by reefer madness hysteria and a nationwide crackdown on cannabis use.
It’s not a surprise that many from this era have retained their biases toward marijuana. Between the mid-twenties and late forties, people are still learning how to think outside of what they were taught as children, but in doing so, it seems like some may need more time than others!
With an approval rating of 30%, this group is more likely than any other to believe that cannabis should be legal both medicinally and recreationally. They’re also predominantly favourable toward using marijuana as an alternative treatment for certain ailments.
Baby Boomers
Baby boomers are often accused of being anti-weed, but the reality is more complicated. Many in this generation retain opinions from both their parents and grandparents who smoked marijuana heavily during youth; however, most Boomers became opposed to smoking it as they grew older due largely because society had changed so much around them – especially with regard to social norms regarding drugs like cannabis which were criminalized!
It’s unsurprising that this generation is more likely to have mixed feelings about marijuana use, with 39% in favour of legalization and 34% opposed. However, those who are pro-legalization are more likely to be older members of the baby boomer generation!
This could indicate a generational shift in attitude, or it could simply be that people are more likely to change their minds on the issue as they age. Only time will tell how this issue plays out among baby boomers!
Generation X
Generation X is much more likely to support marijuana legalization than any other generation, with a whopping 52% in favour! It could be due to the reason that this generation is much more open-minded than their predecessors, or it could be because they’re more likely to have personal experience with cannabis use.
Whatever the reason, it’s clear that Generation X is much more accepting of marijuana use than any other generation!
Because so many Gen Xers are in their 40s and 50s now, they have a great deal of purchasing power. The monetary influence will likely continue to impact the growth or decline of weed culture- shaping how youth sees marijuana use for years ahead!
Millennials
The millennials are a generation that has been called “the lost,” as they were born between 1980 and 1995. They believe in marijuana legalization for both medicinal and recreational purposes; 70% of adults aged 18-29 say this should be legal nationwide! A recent poll found out 50%, which means almost two-thirds (65%) are in favour of people under 30 years old about legalizing cannabis.
It is good news for the future of weed culture, as it indicates that the younger generation is more accepting of cannabis use than any other generation before them!
However, it’s worth noting that millennials are also more likely to believe that marijuana is harmful to one’s health. This could be due to the fact that they grew up during a time when they saw what it can do to people who abuse it, or it could simply be that they’re more cautious than their predecessors.
Generation Z
The generation that is currently the smallest, but will soon be the largest, is Generation Z. This generation was born between 1996 and 2010, making them the first true digital natives.
They are also the most accepting of cannabis use of any generation, with 71% in favour of legalization! This is likely due to the fact that they have grown up. In a time when the stigma around cannabis use is rapidly declining.
They are also more likely than any other generation to believe that marijuana has medicinal benefits. With 63% of Gen Zers saying it should be legal for medical purposes!
This is also a piece of good news for the future of weed and the culture surrounding it!
Bottom Line
You can see one thing common in all generations. That is an increase in the percentage of people who support marijuana legalization!
This indicates that attitudes toward cannabis are slowly but surely changing. That the stigma surrounding it is slowly fading away.
It’s also clear that each generation has different attitudes towards cannabis use. Which is likely due to the different experiences they have had with it.
